Bossis said. “Patients who have benefited from psilocybin clinical research have reported less anxiety, improved quality of life, enhanced psychological and spiritual well-being, and a greater acceptance of the life-changes brought on by cancer.”

“Dramatic” improvement in quality of life

The compound psilocybin naturally occurs in a wide variety of mushrooms. The body metabolizes it into psilocin, which is known to activate the brain’s serotonin receptors. Psilocybin functions as a potent psychotropic compound, accounting for the widespread popularity of “magic mushrooms.”

In the studies described in the chapter, patients enrolled in the ongoing Psilocybin Cancer Anxiety Study at the Bluestone Center for Clinical Research were psychologically prepared for the psychotropic experiences associated with psilocybin use, followed by several integrative psychotherapy sessions. Patients then underwent two separate “drug administration” sessions, one involving psilocybin and the other involving a placebo.

The researchers found that psilocybin consistently induced mystical and spiritual experiences in the patients, who then experienced improvements in emotional and psychological health.

“Mystical or peak consciousness states in cancer patients have been associated with a number of benefits including improved psychological, spiritual, and existential well-being,” Bossis said.

The chapter includes a vignette chronicling the case of a patient who had suffered from extreme pain, achiness, fatigue, discomfort and psychological distress over the course of three years resulting from intensive chemotherapy. The patient was struggling with increasing levels of anxiety and depression. Although the patient’s cancer status and chemotherapy schedule did not change, he reported that 18 weeks after psilocybin treatment, he was still experiencing significantly better mood, attitude and coping than before the treatment.

“My quality of life is dramatically improved,” he said.

The experiments reported in the chapter consist of pilot studies that comprise only a part of the ongoing Psilocybin Cancer Anxiety Study. The study was recently featured in a news article in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

“It is a welcome development that this promising and novel clinical research model utilizing psilocybin has begun to gain clinical and academic attention,” Bossis said.

Five years later, in 2010, armed officials from local, state, federal, and even foreign government agencies came and raided the club at gunpoint, stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of farm-fresh food products, including raw milk cheese products made by Morningland.

Not surprisingly, the government thugs responsible for stealing food from Rawesome failed to follow their own confiscation protocols when they hauled off the cheese and other refrigerated goods in room-temperature crates rather than iced coolers, possibly subjecting these products to spoilage and contamination. And instead of immediately testing the allegedly tainted products, officials took their sweet time and waited an entire week before eventually claiming that the products, including Morningland‘s cheese, were tainted with harmful bacteria.

Not long after, officials from the Missouri Milk Board (MMB) suddenly started harassing Morningland, and jointly with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the farm to destroy 50,000 pounds of perfectly safe, raw, artisan cheese worth more than $250,000. Besides representing the farm’s entire inventory, not a single pound of this 50,000 pounds had ever tested positive for bacterial contamination. In fact, neither the MMB nor the FDA had ever tested any of the cheese for safety prior to ordering its destruction.

When Morningland‘s owners tried to reason with the officials, explaining to them that the cheese samples collected in California were not properly stored or tested during the raid, their petitions fell on deaf ears. Morningland even offered to conduct its own independent tests on cheese samples from every production batch in its inventory to prove their safety, but the MMB and the FDA ultimately refused. Now, nearly three years later, the MMB, with the help of numerous government lackeys, has forcibly removed most of Morningland‘s entire inventory of cheese, effectively putting the farm out of business.

On January 25, 2013, representatives from the MMB, as well as sheriff’s deputies from the Howell County Sheriff’s Department, came and seized more than 36 tons of perfectly good raw cheese from Morningland, enforcing the unjustified tyranny perpetrated by their superiors against a family farm that did absolutely nothing wrong. In other words, Morningland has now been officially put out of business by the same type of rogue government authoritarianism that our nation’s founding fathers shed their blood to escape.

Not only did the MMB and the FDA refuse to allow Morningland to have any legitimate safety tests conducted on its cheese, but they also obtained illegitimate court orders to have the cheese seized without admissible warrants, for the sole purpose of destroying the farm. There is no other explanation as to why a farm producing a wholesome, clean food product was targeted, persecuted, and ultimately eliminated for absolutely no reason.

Friends, family, and other supporters of Morningland were actually onsite to capture video footage of the MMB’s minions and sheriff’s deputies hauling off the cheese the day of the confiscation. While the MMB was directly responsible for actually seizing the cheese, the Howell County Sheriff’s Department made sure the illegal seizure took place without any “physical” altercations — well, other than when Howell County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Al Jones physical swiped a video camera out of the hand of Michael Evans’ cameraman as they were capturing the incident for America’s Voice Now. The entire matter is truly disturbing, and clearly illustrates the rapid decline of America into complete totalitarianism and government dictatorship.

Within one year of treatment, 17 of the 19 patients had achieved a healthy weight, with some of the participants experiencing weight gain and the others experiencing weight loss, as needed. Muscle spasms, stiffness, tremors, pain, nightmares, and flashbacks related to post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) were significantly reduced among participants, while sleeping hours were significantly increased. Participants also experienced a significant improvement in mood and in communication skills.

Use of pharmaceutical drugs reduced

Notably, participants also significantly reduced their use of pharmaceutical drugs such as antipsychotics, painkillers, mood stabilizers and drugs for Parkinson’s disease. After one year of medical marijuana treatment, 72 percent of study participants had reduced their use of pharmaceuticals by an average of 1.7 drugs per day. Researcher Zach Klein noted that this finding is of particular importance because so many of the drugs that patients were able to discontinue can carry severe side effects.

Marijuana is gaining increasing medical attention as a treatment for chronic conditions ranging from pain to cancer to PTSD. It is known to act as an effective pain reliever, appetite regulator and sleep aid even in cases that prove resistant to pharmaceuticals.

Another recent study, published in October in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, found that medical marijuana is effective at reducing debilitating muscle stiffness in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). This stiffness, which is highly resistant to current MS treatments, affects 90 percent of MS patients and regularly interferes with mobility, sleep and daily function.

Klein is currently working on another study, to test whether medical marijuana can be beneficial to people who suffer from dysphagia, or trouble swallowing. Dysphagia is a common concern in the critically ill, and can actually lead to starvation if not treated properly. Klein hopes that medical marijuana will prove beneficial in treating dysphagia because it has previously been shown to stimulate the part of the brain that is thought to regulate the swallowing reflex.

According to a 2012 poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, three of every four U.S. residents oppose federal prosecution of medical marijuana dispensaries, growers, sellers and users in the states that have legalized medical marijuana.

Pentavalent vaccine killing children in India, Vietnam

(NaturalNews) A group of academics, professors, public health teachers and pediatricians concerned about deaths following the administration of the Pentavalent vaccine is requesting that health officials have it withdrawn from the vaccination schedule in India.

The vaccine, which is a combination of DPT, Hib and Hep B, was recently introduced in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, in southern India, following a recommendation by the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization, according to the Office of Medical and Scientific Justice, a private investigative agency specializing in “victims and witnesses of medical and scientific corruption.”

In a letter to national health officials, the group said there had been concern over the safety of the vaccine, so it was only introduced in two states, in order to monitor its safety.

No ‘alternative cause’ found

“Thereafter, according to the minutes of the NTAGI meeting, the data was to be reviewed after one year of the introduction, before extending its use to other states. We are concerned that well before the data from Kerala and Tamil Nadu could be analyzed, it was introduced in Haryana at the end of last year,” said the letter, which was sent to the Indian health secretary on Jan. 15.

The group said that three more infants had died in Kerala recently, while another died in Haryana, all after being given the vaccine. At first glance, there seems to be no “alternative cause” for the deaths other than the vaccine, it said.

In November, there were three deaths in Vietnam, which led health officials there to terminate use of the vaccine immediately. There have been similar related deaths in Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Pakistan after administration of the vaccine.

When each death is seen separately, they may seem coincidental, the letter said. But when viewed collectively, the deaths should be seen as related and part of a pattern.

Health officials in Pakistan labeled the casualties as “sudden death,” as in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, but the group, in its letter, said that clearly wasn’t the case.

In Bhutan, there were eight deaths linked to the vaccine, but health officials there said they were caused by encephalitis, despite there being no evidence of infection. The group noted that a year after the vaccinations had ceased so, too, had “encephalitis” deaths.

Meanwhile, in Sri Lanka, the group of experts examined deaths following administration of the vaccine, reporting that they could not find an alternative cause for the deaths except the vaccine.

Monitoring of vaccine ‘did not happen’

“It is for us as experts and the Union government to look at all these seemingly isolated instances of deaths in a comprehensive manner to see the underlying pattern and act if needed,” says the letter. “Considering that the vaccine is given to a large number of children who are well, it is crucial that they be completely safe.”

“As doctors, we are aware that most medicines have some side effects, but repeated instances of deaths as side effect from a vaccination program for a disease that itself can be treated with antibiotics cannot be acceptable,” said the group.

A separate report regarding the vaccine said requirements to track the effectiveness of the vaccine were not carried out.

“The PV vaccine was supposed to be a pilot project in Kerala and Tamil Nadu on the recommendation of (NTAGI) in Dec 2011,” Health India reported. “It was introduced to tackle the rising deaths due to pneumonia and meningitis which are becoming leading causes for under-five child mortality in India. All the infants administered with the vaccine were to be monitored and reported about diligently. The data was supposed to be reviewed after one year before extending the program to other states. This didn’t happen.”

Medical science continues to stay silent about milk thistle as a cancer remedy

(NaturalNews) Milk thistle, or silymarin, has been used as a natural herb to assist liver function for thousands of years. The herb reduces liver enzyme levels, helps reduce inflammation, and assists in modulating T-cells. This study mentioned clear evidence of milk thistle’s ability to fight reproductive system cancer cells in both males and females, as well as skin cancer. Milk thistle is generally accepted as safe and well-tolerated.

The National Cancer Institute readily admits there are case studies proving the effectiveness of milk thistle for cancer. In one case study, a woman with leukemia had to stop chemotherapy because her liver enzyme levels were abnormal. When milk thistle was administered, those levels were normalized, and the woman was able to continue her cancer treatments.

In a second case, a man’s liver tumors regressed before beginning chemotherapy simply by taking milk thistle.

Yet a third, placebo-controlled study involving 50 children with leukemia showed improvement over a four week period when the experimental group of children took milk thistle. Tests showed that milk thistle was able to protect the children’s livers from the toxic effects of chemotherapy to the point where these children did not have to have their dosages reduced. Unfortunately, there was not enough improvement to be documented as “significant.”

The National Cancer Institute goes on to mention clinical studies which support the use of milk thistle for a variety of liver diseases, hepatitis C, and diabetes. So why not say milk thistle “works-”

Revisited and reconfirmed in August 2012, the National Cancer Institute stated that it cannot recommend the use of milk thistle in cancer therapy because of a qualifying standard called “evidence scores.”

An evidence analysis looks at the strength of the statistics used in any clinical study and the strength of the endpoint, or outcome of any given treatment. Combining these analyses produces an evidence score, which is assigned to every study submitted to the National Cancer Institute for review.

In the case of milk thistle, the problem lies not in the herb, but in the limited number of clinical studies. Until more well-designed research is performed, the National Cancer Institute cannot recommend milk thistle as a remedy for cancer.

Scientific explanation behind the brainwashing power of social conformity

(NaturalNews) Human beings are social creatures, but revealing new evidence shows that this quality is not always beneficial.

A study published last year in the journal Science found that when a person is pressured by peers, they have a tendency to form false memories and can convince themselves of different recollections of the past in order to fit what others insist is the truth.

“Human memory is strikingly susceptible to social influences, yet we know little about the underlying mechanisms,” said an abstract of the study.

“We examined how socially induced memory errors are generated in the brain by studying the memory of individuals exposed to recollections of others. Participants exhibited a strong tendency to conform to erroneous recollections of the group, producing both long-lasting and temporary errors, even when their initial memory was strong and accurate,” the abstract said. “Our findings reveal how social manipulation can alter memory and extend the known functions of the amygdala to encompass socially mediated memory distortions.”

Peer pressure convinced people they were wrong

Participants in the study watched a movie in groups, and then were questioned individually about the film afterward. Four days later, participants were questioned once more.

Researchers said that 70 percent of the time study participants changed their recollection of the film to match incorrect memories held by the others in their group, a finding that held true even for questions participants had initially felt very strongly that they had answered correctly.

Scientists involved in the study called these lapses “socially induced memory errors” because they discovered conclusive evidence that the group caused the change in answers.

“Participants were hooked up to an MRI while answering questions, and their hippocampus and amygdala lit up when changing their answers after being told the group’s memory differed from theirs, but not when a computer told them they were wrong. In other words, peer pressure convinced people they were wrong, as opposed to cold facts,” said an analysis of the study by The Raw Story.

In half of the memory errors, the false memory replaced the person’s initial, true memory.

As pointed out by Mother Jones magazine, the study’s results could explain why poll numbers indicate extraordinarily high levels of support for statements like “Obama is a Muslim” and “Obama is not a U.S. citizen” – statements that are demonstrably and provably false but which are vocally supported by several groups and media outlets.

Prior to this study there had already been evidence suggesting that people were very willing to change their stories, even if they knew they were true, due to social pressure. What makes the most recent study, by lead researcher Micah Edelson, an Israeli scientist, unique “is he used an MRI scanner while people were answering interviewers’ questions,” Mother Jones‘ Jen Quraishi wrote.

Edelson found that study participants’ hippocampi and amygdales indicated activity only when people changed answers to match those shared by their viewing group. But if they were told to change their answers by a computer, their hippocampi and amygdales did not activate; the hippocampus is associated with memory; the amygdale is linked to emotion.

Not always a bad thing

“Our memory is surprisingly susceptible to social influences,” Edelson said during a July 2011 podcast. This could be cause for concern to some people, he said, because “studies have shown that…[witnesses] often discuss crime details with each other before testifying, and this can definitely have an influence on court cases.”

Subsequent studies have indicated that toddlers, too, may also give into peer pressure.

Researchers reported that 2-year-olds are more likely influenced to copy the actions of three other toddlers than if they saw the same actions carried out by just one other toddler, according to a report by HealthDay.

That said, peer pressure sensitivity needn’t always be negative.

(NaturalNews) People who are not married and who do not have a permanent partner are significantly more likely to die prematurely during middle age and people in permanent partnerships, according to a study conducted by Duke University researchers and published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

The researchers analyzed information from 4802 participants in the ongoing North Carolina Alumni Heart Study (UNCAHS) of people born in the 1940s. In particular, they examined data on marital and non-marital status during the middle years, controlled for differences in socioeconomic status, risky behaviors and personality at college entry (at about age 18).

They found that people who had never been married were twice as likely to die during middle age as those who had been in a stable marriage for their whole adult lives. People who had lost a partner but not remarried were also significantly more likely to die prematurely than those in long-term marriages, even after adjustment for potential confounding risk factors.

Death in middle age was considered to be premature death, since a healthy person would be expected to live longer.

“Our results suggest that attention to non-marital patterns of partnership is likely to become more important for these Baby Boomers,” the researchers wrote.

“These patterns appear to provide different levels of emotional and functional social support, which has been shown to be related to mortality. Social ties during midlife are important to help us understand premature mortality.”

The importance of social ties

The findings are consistent with prior research linking social ties in general, and marriage in particular, with longevity in various populations. For example, a 2010 study published in PLoS Medicine reviewed 148 prior studies on the connection between social relationships and mortality, consisting of a total of 308,000 participants followed for an average of 7.5 years each. They found that the stronger a person’s social relationships, the more likely they were to survive over that time period. The researchers behind the analysis suggested that social ties help people deal with stress better, imbue life with more meaning, and may even encourage healthier behaviors.

Other studies have shown differing results depending on whether a marriage is happy or unhappy, however. For example, a 2008 study conducted by researchers from Brigham Young University and published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine found that happily married people had lower blood pressure compared not just with single people, but also with people who were unhappily married. And a 2009 study found that unhappy marriages increased both partners’ risk of depression, while also increasing women’s risk of symptoms associated with metabolic syndrome, a major risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This was consistent with prior findings that unhappy marriages may actually harm people’s health.

Yet in the new study, it was the fact of being married itself – not just being happily married – that was associated with longer life. Further research will be necessary to tease apart whether even unhappy marriages provide longevity benefits, or whether some more complex effect is at work.

BPA exposure predisposes children to kidney damage, heart disease

(NaturalNews) Childhood exposure to the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is associated with changes in the body that predispose people to heart and kidney disease later in life, according to a study conducted by researchers from New York University and published in the journal Kidney International.

The findings follow a study by the same research team, published in September in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which showed that children and adolescents with higher levels of BPA in their urine were significantly more likely to be obese.

“While our cross-sectional study cannot definitively confirm that BPA contributes to heart disease or kidney dysfunction in children, together with our previous study of BPA and obesity, this new data adds to already existing concerns about BPA as a contributor to cardiovascular risk in children and adolescents,” co-lead author Leonardo Trasande said.

“It further supports the call to limit exposure of BPA in this country, especially in children.”

BPA, a chemical widely used in plastics, in the linings of food and beverage cans, and in a wide variety of other applications from compact discs to the thermal paper used for receipts, has been implicated as an endocrine disruptor linked with changes to the human metabolic, nervous and reproductive systems. Its use in baby bottles and sippy cups has been banned in Canada and the European Union, which has caused it to be largely phased out of those products in the Western world.

Yet exposure to the chemical is still widespread, and 92 percent of U.S. children already have traces of BPA in their urine by age six.

“Removing it from aluminum cans is probably one of the best ways we can limit exposure,” Trasande said. “There are alternatives that manufacturers can use to line aluminum cans.”

Protein in the urine

The researchers analyzed data on 710 US residents between the ages of six and 19 who had participated in the 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The researchers compared the BPA levels in urine with those of a protein called albumin.

In healthy people, the kidney’s glomerular membrane prevents protein molecules from entering the urine. When this membrane is damaged, however, albumin may enter the urine.

Even after controlling for other risk factors including age, gender, weight, race and ethnicity, caregiver education, poverty to income ratio, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, high cholesterol and exposure to tobacco smoke, the researchers found that higher levels of BPA were significantly associated with a higher albumin to creatinine ratio – an early marker associated with an elevated risk of kidney damage and heart disease. Notably, the BPA levels observed in the study were actually relatively low.

Trasande noted that while the study excluded children who already had kidney disease, it is likely that such children would be even more vulnerable to the effects of BPA.

“Because their kidneys are already working harder to compensate and have limited functional reserve, they may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of environmental toxins,” he said.

Sanjay Gupta and Tom Ridge warn about psychiatric drugs in mass murders

(NaturalNews) For the first time ever, and for a brief moment in time, two knowledgeable and highly credentialed public figures have commented on the fact that psychiatric medications cause violence and must be considered suspect in the case of the Newtown shooter. But then, as if it never happened, and as if psychiatric drugs could not possibly be implicated in violence, the issue was dropped by the media.

Fortunately I happened to be watching television on both CNN and Fox Cable News shortly after the Newton tragedy and I have put the TV clips onto YouTube.

The most striking commentary came from Sanjay Gupta, neurosurgeon and famous chief medical correspondent on CNN. On December 18, 2012 at approximately 5:25 p.m. on CNN, he offered the following remarks:

We still don’t know much about the shooter who lived in this home. But there is something else to consider: What medications if any he was on- I’m specifically talking about antidepressants. If you look at the studies of other shootings like this that have happened, medications like this were a common factor. Now I want to be clear I’m not saying that antidepressants can’t be effective. But people seem to agree that there is a vulnerable time. When someone starts these medications and when someone stops could lead to increased impulsivity and decreased judgment, and making someone out of touch. None of this is an excuse and it’s never just one thing. None of these behaviors will fully predict or explain why. But soon again there will be hindsight that might just help prevent another tragedy. It’s worth pointing out over a seven-year period there were 11,000 episodes of violence related to drug side effects. If there was a death involved, often it was the individual of himself or herself, a suicide.

Gupta doesn’t say where he got the figure of 11,000 drug-induced cases of violence. However, that exact unconfirmed estimate has circulated on the Internet in regard to violence reports to the FDA.

There is very convincing evidence of violence induced by psychiatric drugs in a scientific review of all reports of violence and homicidal ideation made to the FDA over a 69 month period. Less extreme behaviors, such as “Aggression, Belligerence and Hostility,” were excluded. Among 454 prescription drugs, 31 drugs had a disproportional rate of reported violence or homicidal threats for a total of 1527 reports. Two-thirds of drugs had no reports of violence. The drugs that most clearly cause violence included varenicline (Chantix, a smoking cessation aid), 11 antidepressant drugs, 3 drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and 5 hypnotic/sedatives (sleep aids and tranquilizers). Thus, all but one of the top offenders were psychiatric drugs. Antidepressants as a group were 8.4 times more likely than other prescription drugs to be associated with violence. This study should end the controversy. Psychiatric drugs do cause violence. As the researchers concluded:

Acts of violence toward others are a genuine and serious adverse drug event associated with a relatively small number of drugs.

On Sunday December 16, 2012 on the Fox News Channel, former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge was interviewed by Shannon Bream. Ridge was also on the Virginia Tech Review Panel. His roles as Homeland Security boss and Virginia Tech Review Panel member put him into a knowledgeable position. In discussing flawed efforts to intervene in the lives of potentially violent youth, Ridge observed:

Or we put them on severe medications. One of the students in the Columbine shooting was on severe medication and apparently there’s analysis that it probably even contributed to his destructive aggressive behavior.

Combined with Sanjay Gupta’s remarks, these observations by former Secretary of Homeland Defense Tom Ridge should elevate psychiatric drug-induced violence to a new level in public discourse.

Ridge’s characterization of the medication prescribed to Eric Harris as “severe” was incorrect. Harris was prescribed routine antidepressant treatment. As a medical expert in cases surrounding Eric Harris and the Columbine shootings, I obtained the drug company’s official report to the FDA on March 17, 1999 confirming that one of the two shooters (Harris) had a “therapeutic blood level” of the antidepressant Luvox (fluvoxamine) in his system. Luvox is similar to other well-known antidepressants, including Prozac (fluoxetine), Paxil (paroxetine) and Zoloft (sertraline) in its effects.

As a medical expert, I also had access to medical records and can confirm from these unpublished documents that Eric Harris was taking Luvox regularly for one year leading up to the shootings. The dose was increased 200 mg per day on February 9, 2009, two and one-half months prior to the April 20th assaults. He saw his doctor and his prescription was renewed on March 13, 2009. At that time, the medical record described him as suffering from medication-induced tremors, indicating a degree of toxicity.

I first began writing about the risks of violence associated with antidepressants in the early 1990s in Talking Back to Prozac (coauthored by Ginger Breggin). I specifically addressed Eric Harris’ use of Luvox in my book, Reclaiming Our Children: A Healing Solution for a Nation in Crisis (2000). I also about Eric Harris and Luvox-induced violence in a peer-reviewed scientific article titled “Fluvoxamine as a cause of stimulation, mania and aggression with a critical analysis of the FDA-approved label” (2001).

With the exception of the disclosure of Eric Harris’ toxicology report, it has been very difficult to obtain exact information about the psychiatric drug exposure of previous mass murders. For example, James Holmes, the Aurora, Colorado shooter was in treatment with psychiatrist Lynne Fenton in the months before he assaulted people in a movie theater. He mailed a box of materials to her shortly before committing the violence. A court hearing recently revealed that four prescription bottles had been removed from his home. Yet to this day information has been withheld about what psychiatric medications he was almost surely taking.

Similarly, there are unconfirmed reports that Newtown mass murderer Adam Lanza was taking psychiatric drugs. According to the Washington Post, he was, “A really rambunctious kid, as one former neighbor in Newtown, Conn., recalled him, adding that he was on medication.” Yet no information has been released concerning his medication use.

To regulate caloric intake, she suggests using measuring spoons and cups as serving utensils. Since both portion size and caloric density tend to be higher in restaurant dining home-cooked meals, Bartfield suggests looking up the nutritional information of your favorite restaurant meals ahead of time.

2. Overestimating physical activity

According to Bartfield, you need to reduce your energy balance by the highest hundred calories per day to lose a pound a week. Without decreasing food consumption at all, this would require exercising vigorously for 60 minutes or more every single day. A more realistic goal, she suggests, a small increases in daily activity (like taking the stairs rather than the elevator), combined with 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise most days. 3. Poor meal spacing

(NaturalNews) On November 6, in the wake of one of the most expensive and scurrilous smear campaigns in history, six million voters scared the hell out of Monsanto and Big Food Inc. by coming within a razor’s edge of passing the first statewide mandatory labeling law for genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Prop 37, a citizens’ ballot initiative that would have required the mandatory labeling of billions of dollars of genetically engineered (GE) foods and put an end to the routine industry practice of fraudulently marketing GE-tainted foods as “natural” or “all natural,” lost by a narrow margin of 48.6% to 51.4%. Opponents couldn’t claim anything close to a landslide, even though they outspent the pro-labeling campaign almost six to one.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) immediately put a happy face on the narrow victory, repeating its tired old propaganda in a public statement: “Proposition 37 was a deeply flawed measure that would have resulted in higher food costs, frivolous lawsuits and increased state bureaucracies. This is a big win for California consumers, taxpayers, business and farmers.”

But Jennifer Hatcher, senior vice president of government and public affairs for the Food Marketing Institute, came closer to expressing www.supermarketnews.com the real sentiments of the big guns who opposed Prop 37, a measure she had previously said “scared us to death,” in her official statement:

On Jan. 4, activists in Washington State delivered approximately 300,000 signatures to the state legislature to guarantee that a mandatory GMO labeling Initiative, I-522, will be on the ballot in November. Initial polling shows that Washington state voters will likely pass this Ballot Initiative, no matter how much money the biotech industry and large food corporations put into an anti-labeling campaign.

A statewide pre-election eve poll conducted by Lake Research found that the Biotech Behemoth’s “No on 37″ propaganda campaign successfully confused many Californians. As of Nov. 5, the day before the election, the majority of Californians stated that they still supported mandatory labeling of GE foods. But a critical mass, especially the 40% who voted early by absentee ballot, said they were willing to give up their right to know what was in their food if mandatory GE labels might increase food costs, expand the size and power of state bureaucrats, harm family farmers or unfairly benefit trial lawyers and other “special interests.”

That changed once the YES on 37 campaign launched its own modest $3-million ad campaign on October 27. Once the pro-labeling ads rolled out, several million undecided voters saw through the biotech and junk-food industry propaganda and voted Yes on 37. In fact, Prop 37 won the election-day vote. But it was too little, too late. The campaign couldn’t recover from its losses in early voting.

That was California. Washington State promises to tell a different story.

Looking at the logistics and outcome of the Prop 37 campaign in California in 2012 and comparing these to the upcoming I-522 battle in Washington, there are several major differences that will likely prove to be decisive:

(1) Size and campaign costs. California is an enormous state, both geographically and in terms of population. Its TV and radio ad markets are also among the priciest in the country. Tough for a grassroots campaign with a small budget to reach California voters far and wide, on the ground and through the media. Even tougher to compete with an opposition willing and able to spend $46 million to win. Compare that scenario with Washington State, which has one-fifth the population of California, and where $1 spent on TV ads equals $8 in California. Factor in that Washington’s population is highly concentrated in the health and environmentally-conscious Seattle metropolitan area, and it’s easy to see that internet, in-person contact, and radio and TV advertising will cost less and be easier to execute in Washington than it was in California. Experts estimate that Monsanto and its allies will be able to spend only $20 million in Washington on advertising. That’s enough to saturate the state’s airwaves. But it’s not too much for the Yes on I-522 campaign to overcome as long as it can raise and spend $4-$5 million – about half of what the California labeling campaign raised.

(2) Timing. In California, Yes on 37 forces didn’t get on the ballot until May. That left only six months for public education and fundraising. In Washington, I-522 proponents have a full nine months before people begin their voting (which is by mail).

(3) Support from farmers and rural communities. In California, Prop 37 was supported mostly by consumers and organic farmers. In Washington State, wheat farmers, whether organic or not, apple farmers and fishing communities also vocally support mandatory GMO labeling. That’s because GMO labeling is arguably in the best economic interests of a state where unlabeled GMO wheat, apples and salmon spilling into the market would severely damage state agricultural exports to countries that either forbid GMO imports or require GMO labeling.

(4) Progressive elected officials and electorate. California’s Governor Brown refused to take a stand on Prop 37. But Washington’s new elected Governor, Jay Inslee, is a long-time supporter and former Congressional advocate of GMO labeling. Washington voters recently reminded us that they are proud progressives, by approving the legalization of marijuana via a November ballot Initiative. California voters defeated a similar measure in 2010.

(5) The Frankenfish controversy. Despite enormous public opposition and warnings by scientists that genetically engineered salmon pose unacceptable health and environmental risks, the Obama administration’s FDA announced in late December that it would nonetheless allow unlabeled genetically engineered salmon to be commercialized. Polls show that Washington voters are adamantly opposed to this fast-growing, likely allergenic mutant salmon – part fish, part eel – entering the market. Fishermen/fisherwomen, chefs and restaurants are already raising their voices in opposition. Meanwhile in Alaska, GMO salmon will have to be labeled because of a state law passed in 2005. The biotech industry is going to have a difficult time explaining why Frankenfish have to be labeled in Alaska, but not in Washington or other states.

(6) Divisions between Big Food and Big Biotech. As the comments by the Food Marketing Institute executive suggest, big food companies are starting to worry about their image. They’re worried about having to fight costly, high-profile battles against GMO labeling in numerous states, possibly even simultaneously. A number of large food companies that dumped big money into defeating Prop 37 – companies like Kellogg’s, General Mills, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Kraft and Dean Foods, own “natural” or organic brands. Those brands, including Kashi, Muir Glen, Cascadian Farm, Ben and Jerry’s, White Wave, Horizon and others, are starting to feel the heat from angry consumers who have joined the “Traitor Boycott.” How long will the nation’s food manufacturers and supermarket chains carry the water and do the dirty work for Monsanto and biotech industry-

I’m talking about the big mass tragedies. Sandy Hook, the Aurora theater, Hurricane Sandy, Katrina.

Many of the interviews with survivors are done on the spot, with no prep. But the biggest interviews are done in a television studio or a home, by a recognized anchor. The setting is arranged beforehand and lit well. A mood and a framework are established.

The guests are prepped by one of the producers before they go on-air. This is where the brainwashing occurs. A potential conflict needs to be resolved. The network has its agenda and the guest has his.

The guest is swimming in a welter of emotions, in the wake of the tragedy. A family member has died. The environment of the storm or the murders is still chaotic.

The network wants to “edit” these feelings, to convey something specific.”

The producer says to the guest, “What we want to do here is let our audience know how special your daughter was. How wonderful a person she was. We realize, of course, that you’re grieving. We understand and honor that. We do. In this interview, we really want to give you a chance, though, to tell the world what a special girl she was. Talk about her life, her interests, her hobbies, how she was thought of by the family and by friends at school. Honor her memory…”

Now, this may be the last thing on the guest’s mind. This grieving mother may be feeling angry, outraged. She is feeling absolutely desolate. She is feeling lost. Given the opportunity, she would express these feelings.

But this is not what the network or the anchor wants. The “program” at the moment involves “reflection on the happy moments of the child’s life.” It’s part of the pre-set storyline.

At this moment, for this grieving mother, the happy moments are the farthest thing from her mind. But who cares- She just fodder for the network’s agenda.

And if the producer is skillful enough, he can gently convince the mother that she should devote four minutes of commercially sponsored national television to “a celebration” of her dead child’s life.

Suddenly, it makes sense to the profoundly confused, profoundly searching mother. Yes. Why not- Why not go along with the program- She’ll have a video clip about her wonderful daughter forever. A scrapbook memory.

Under no circumstances, of course, will the producer or the anchor permit the mother to go on camera and show outrage and anger. That’s verboten. That cuts too close to the bone. That doesn’t fit the mandatory sequence of horror, shock, loss, grief, healing, resolution, celebration of a life lost.

The whole sequence is artificial. It’s imposed. It’s orchestrated. It’s a stage play, produced in great part through interviews with guests who have suffered loss and who are “real.”

Except they’re not. They’re programmed to deliver what the networks want.

And behind all this- Behind the mandatory spooled-out story line, which takes days to reveal in full, on television- The concealed anomalies and lies and contradictions in the commission of the crime and the ensuing cover-up.

The network story line hides as much of that as possible.

This is why the interview-prep is so important. Here is where the guests, before they go on camera, are nudged into the right slot, are shown what to focus on, are brainwashed into doing something they would never do.

Programming guests is a skill. Networks need people who can do that well. They have them. They pay them.

Anchor: I understand your daughter liked to make airplane models. Did you think that was unusual-

Mother: Well, at first we did. But she was good at it, and she enjoyed it so much, we became very enthusiastic about it. My husband introduced her to a buddy of his from the Air Force, and Cindy went up in a jet.

Anchor (smiling broadly): Really- A jet-

Mother: When she came home, she was overjoyed.

Anchor: Did she want to become a pilot-

Mother (laughing): For a few days. But her love of making models led her to want to be an artist. Our son is a graphics person. He taught Cindy to make computer pictures of our whole extended family. (laughing) We have lots of cousins and aunts and uncles. Cindy put their pictures all over the house. She knew everybody’s names when she was four…

Completely wacko. But that’s what the television audience sees and digests and accepts. And the anchor moves it right along. A fabricated story. Intercut, of course, with Cindy’s pictures and Cindy smiling and playing and drawing and sitting at the computer.

And when the dust settles and the mother is being chauffeured home from the interview, her mind wanders and she begins to think about the revenge she wants to visit on the killer of her daughter. As many good mothers would. But it’s too late. She’s already had her four minutes on television. She feels like a fool, but it’s too late.

She’ll never get to say to Diane Sawyer, “You know, Diane, I wish somehow I was there at the school, and I had a gun, and I shot that killer dead.”

No, that will never happen.

And mothers across America, who are feeling that they, too, would have wanted to be there, in the school, if their child was in mortal danger, and would have wanted to have a gun and shoot the killer dead to protect their child at all costs…those mothers will be, to a significant degree, reprogrammed by the Diane Sawyer interview, and they too will begin thinking of the happier times and the old days and the smiles and the laughter.

This is how a handful of television interviews with skillfully prepped guests can make all the difference in the world. Especially, in the case of Sandy Hook, when gun ownership is now at stake. Do I have to draw a picture for you-

Because, admit it, if you were the father or mother of a child who was murdered, wouldn’t you have at least a few serious thoughts about revenge- Wouldn’t you- Wouldn’t you think about the .45 you have in the closet upstairs-

Television, though, teaches you what to feel.

If after watching a number of these tragedies play out on television, you are completely reprogrammed into some grotesque version of “love everybody all the time and forgive everything,” and you need an outlet, a way to vicariously and subconsciously experience what you REALLY feel, you can always:

Go to the movies. The movies give you a different slant. You can be Mel Gibson killing people to get his kidnapped daughter back. You can be Charles Bronson wiping out street scum to avenge the loss of his wife. You can be Stallone or Arnie. You can roam the countryside spilling blood at every street corner.

The movies give you vicarious license to destroy evil. Television news takes it away.

It’s called the whipsaw effect, and it’s modern mind control, and it puts you in the “excluded middle,” where nothing happens and you remain locked up and passive.

Where the powers-that-be want you to remain.

    What type of muscle development routine do you use? That’s not an easy question to answer. Many people are trying to build muscle on their own, and while it is possible, sometimes it can be frustrating. If you read this article, you may learn some advice that can help you out.

    Better romantic partners make better parents, study finds

    (NaturalNews) The same set of interpersonal skills that make a person a good romantic partner also make them a good parent, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Bristol and published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, a journal of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP).

    SPSP, an organization of social and personality psychologists, promotes scientific research related to thought, behavior, emotions and social interactions.

    Prior studies have examined the importance of various sets of social skills in romantic relationships, while others have examined the importance of those skills in parenting, but none have previously examined the relationship between the two.

    “Our work is the first to look at romantic caregiving and parenting styles at the same time,” lead author Abigail Millings said.

    In the new study, researchers sought to determine whether there is a relationship between families in the way a person cares for their partner and the way they care for their children.

    “We wanted to see how romantic relationships between parents might be associated with what kind of parents they are,” Millings said.

    The researchers evaluated 125 couples with children between the ages of seven and eight for their parenting styles, attachment to each other, and their caregiving responsiveness, which Millings defined as “capacity to be ‘tuned in’ to what the other person needs.”

    “In romantic relationships and in parenting, this might mean noticing when the other person has had a bad day, knowing how to cheer them up, and whether they even want cheering up,” she said.

    “[It's not] just about picking you up when you’re down, it’s also about being able to respond appropriately to the good stuff in life.”

    A shared skill set

    The researchers found that for both fathers and mothers, a shared set of skills applies to both parenting and to romantic relationships.

    “If you can do responsive caregiving, it seems that you can do it across different relationships,” Millings said.

    The way that person cared for their partners; however, had no effect on that partner’s parenting behavior.

    Millings noted that all the researchers found was a correlation between certain relationship traits, but that they do not know if having relationship skills actually causes someone to be a better parent.

    “It might be the case that practicing being sensitive and responsive – for example, by really listening and by really thinking about the other person’s perspective – to our partners will also help us to improve these skills with our kids,” she said. “But we need to do more research to see whether the association can actually be used in this way.”

    Noting that even people without partners can have good relationships with their children, Millings said that the research team now plans to investigate the relationship between parenting and caregiving in other types of family structure.

    They also plan to research whether strengthening caregiving responsiveness in one relationship will lead to improvements in other types of family relationships. If that is the case, they said, it could be possible to design self-help programs for relationship improvement.

    Children of President Obama, media elite visit schools with armed security guards

    (NaturalNews) If the elites in our country are anything they are consistent. Consistently hypocritical.

    In a passionate speech just days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre made what many saw as a bold, outside-the-box suggestion for keeping schools safer moving forward: Put trained, armed guards in them as a way to thwart future attacks by well-armed lunatics and crazies who are doped up on psychotropic drugs:

    …[F]or all the noise and anger directed at us over the past week, no one – nobody – has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now, starting today, in a way that we know works- The only way to answer that question is to face up to the truth. Politicians pass laws for Gun-Free School Zones. They issue press releases bragging about them. They post signs advertising them. And in so doing, they tell every insane killer in America that schools are their safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk.

    The politics of hypocrisy

    Mocked by an absurdly biased mainstream media, labeled as “crazy” by left-wing pundits and politicians, LaPierre went on to point out the blatant hypocrisy of those who have condemned him and his suggestion as unworkable, unwise and simply unthinkable:

    How have our nation’s priorities gotten so far out of order- Think about it. We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, courthouses – even sports stadiums – are all protected by armed security. We care about the President, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents. Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by armed Capitol Police officers. Yet when it comes to the most beloved, innocent and vulnerable members of the American family – our children – we as a society leave them utterly defenseless, and the monsters and predators of this world know it and exploit it.

    This hypocrisy was epitomized by none other than NBC‘s David Gregory, who badgered LaPierre over his stance during a Dec. 23 interview:

    You proposed armed guards in school. We’ll talk about that in some detail in a moment. You confronted the news media. You blamed Hollywood and the gaming industry. But never once did you concede that guns could actually be part of the problem. Is that a meaningful contribution, Mr. LaPierre, or a dodge-

    In trying to be too clever by half, Gregory went on. Citing mass shootings at Columbine and Virginia Tech, both incidents in which armed guards or police officers were present on the grounds, he tried to bait LaPierre: “But you would concede that, as good as an idea as you think this is, it may not work. Because there have been cases where armed guards have not prevented this kind of massacre, this kind of carnage. I want you would concede that point, wouldn’t you-”

    Only the privileged deserve protection-

    Not so surprisingly, Gregory himself conveniently left out the fact that he sends his children to the Quaker school Sidwell Friends where there is a security department consisting of 11 personnel, according to the Weekly Standard, many of whom are police officers and therefore presumed armed.

    But even if they aren’t, Gregory’s kids – and those of a number of political and media elites who also send their children there – will benefit from the full-time Secret Service protection afforded Obama’s children, who attend the school. The others whose children attend Sidwell represent a cornucopia of voices now calling for more gun laws, stricter gun control and outright gun bans.

    Finally, there is this: Gregory smugly asserted that the armed guards at Columbine and Virginia Tech did nothing to prevent the armed attacks on those schools.

    Fine. But I have to ask: Would he consider placing his children in a school without armed guards- Is he willing to take a chance with the lives of his kids to practice what he and others who hold his point of view (and who also have kids in elite, well-protected schools) condescendingly preach-

    Numerous school massacres stopped by gun owners who wielded their weapons in defense of kids

    (NaturalNews) In the midst of all the anti-gun hysteria following the senseless murder of 26 people – 20 of them first graders – at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., one story that is repeatedly overlooked is how often a firearm has been used to save lives and stop senseless murders.

    We here at Natural News believe the mainstream media, which so often overlooks these kinds of stories because they don’t fit into the statist government worldview held by the majority of news editors, has done a disservice to the public by ignoring these acts of selflessness and heroism.

    With that in mind, we bring just some of the most recent high-profile incidents – including what could have been additional school massacres – that were stopped by law-abiding citizens using their Second Amendment rights to protect themselves and others. Scores of individual uses that never get reported are not included here:

    Pearl High School, Mississippi: This incident began the morning of Oct. 1, 1997, when 16-year-old student Luke Windham entered the school with a rifle. Wearing only an orange jumpsuit and a trench coat and making no effort to hide his weapon, he initially entered the school and shot and killed two students, injuring seven others. He was stopped by assistant principal Joel Myrick, who retrieved a .45 cal. handgun from the glove box of his truck.

    “I’ve always kept a gun in the truck just in case something like this ever happened,” said Myrick at the time, who went on to become principal of Corinth High School, Corinth, Miss.

    Appalachia Law School, Virginia: On Jan. 16, 2002, Peter Odighizuwa, 43, a former student from Nigeria, arrived on the campus of the school with a handgun around 1:00 p.m. and immediately killed three people, at least two of them at point-blank range. Two students – Mikael Gross and Tracy Bridges – both retrieved handguns from their vehicles and confronted Odighizuwa. As former police officers, both men were trained to subdue suspects but the fact is they were on the scene and armed, and helped prevent more killings.

    Muskegon, Michigan: From the Aug. 23, 1995, issue of the Muskegon Chronicle: “Plans to slay everyone in the Muskegon, Michigan, store and steal enough cash and jewelry to feed their ‘gnawing hunger for crack cocaine’ fell apart for a band of would-be killers after one of their victims fought back. Store owner Clare Cooper was returning behind the counter after showing three of the four conspirators some jewelry, when one of the group pulled out a gun and shot him four times in the back. Stumbling for the safety of his bullet-proof glass-encased counter, Cooper managed to grab his shotgun and fire as the suspects fled.

    Colorado Springs, Colo.: On Dec. 9, 2007, gunman Mathew Murray, 24, launched an armed attack against the parishioners of the New Life Church that ultimately left two innocent victims dead. But the toll could have been much higher, were it not for the heroic actions of former police officer Jeanne Assam from Minnesota. In an interview she said she very nearly decided not to go to church that morning but because she saw a headline on her computer indicating that two young people were murdered and a training center for Christian missionaries about 70 miles away in the Denver suburb of Arvada, she changed her mind. Murray shot a total of five people before an armed Assam shot and killed him. There were about 7,000 people at the church at the time of the attack.

    “Criminologist Gary Kleck estimates that 2.5 million Americans use guns to defend themselves each year. Out of that number, 400,000 believe that but for their firearms, they would have been dead,” columnist Larry Elder wrote in July, following the shooting tragedy at the premier of the latest Batman movie in Aurora, Colo.

    “We know from Census Bureau surveys that something beyond 100,000 uses of guns for self-defense occur every year,” adds Professor Emeritus James Q. Wilson, a public policy expert at the University of California-Los Angeles. “We know from smaller surveys of a commercial nature that the number may be as high as two-and-a-half or three million. We don’t know what the right number is, but whatever the right number is, it’s not a trivial number.”
